The Salt School Story

Growing up in England at age 16, it was clear to David Bowd that formal schooling wasn’t for everyone.

Salt Hotels’ CEO David Bowd started his first job as a hotel houseman at 16. Soon after, he left high school to pursue hotels full time. Over the next 30 years, David would work his way up from the bottom - from houseman to hotel manager to chief operating officer to the CEO of his own company.

In 2016, Bowd created Salt School™ with his partners Kevin O’Shea & Jenni Loughman to provide alternative education and job training to those interested in a career in hospitality.

The first Salt School™ was launched in Asbury Park, NJ in 2016.

Once a hub of hotels and hospitality, there had not been a hotel opening in Asbury Park for 50 years. With the forthcoming opening of The Asbury Hotel, Salt wanted to hire as many local residents as possible. Through Salt School™ a new path forward was introduced. Over 120 students attended the free 8 week course.

In past years, there have been a total of 8 Salt Schools with over 1000 local participants, many of whom have been employed at Salt Hotels.

Salt School™ is an intensive introduction to all facets of the hospitality industry. Practical components are taught each week by a variety of industry leaders and professionals in their specialty fields of hospitality management.

Classes are designed to be informative, fun, and interactive and give students a sense of real life applications in the industry.

The first Salt School™ was launched in Asbury Park, NJ in 2016.
