WE'RE LOVING: The Shelter Island Historical Society
At Salt Hotels we really love working with organizations that support the communities surrounding our properties. We have worked with The Shelter Island Historical Society for the last few years on several events including their Black + White fund raiser and our annual Christmas Tree Lighting. Recently we had the opportunity to sit down with Nanette Lawrenson, the Executive Director of The Shelter Island Historical Society and learn a little bit more about it.
1. Tell me a little bit about what The Shelter Island Historical Society is and does?
The Shelter Island historical Society collects , preserves and maintains historical documents and objects related to Island history. Our collection is used to provide year-round exhibits and programs and includes over 100,000 documents and museum objects. The Society owns and operates the Island's only museum Havens House which was completed in 1743. Havens House Museum is currently being restored and a addition is being added. The Shelter Island History Center will open in summer 2018.
2. What are some of your favorite events that The Historical Society throws?
The Black & White event. Our annual fund raiser takes place in July. cocktails, dinner, dancing and auction contribute to this beautiful evening. Guests are encouraged to wear "creative" black & white or black or white attire. Professional photographer Eleanor Labrozzi photographs each guest which are mailed to the guests after the event. Some of our guest spend a whole year seeking out that perfect "creative" out fit. July 21, 2018
The Farmers Market takes place every Saturday, Memorial Day through Labor Day from 9AM to noon. Local vendors include farm stands, flowers, cheeses, baked goods , coffee and crafts.
The Oyster Event takes place in October in Havens Barn. Oysters, oysters Rockefeller, and non- oyster food , wine, beer and water are served along with music and dancing. October 21, 2017.
3. Anything new you'd like to tell people about?
We are currently building a $2million Shelter Island History Center which will compliment Havens House Museum and exhibit galleries, meeting space an archival vault, garden and be open year-round. Grand opening is being planned for Summer 2018.
4. What would your perfect, Shelter Island day be?
Everyday is a perfect day to be on Shelter Island! In spring, the Island comes to life with flowers and trees blooming , boats go in the water, golfer are out and we prepare for summer. Walks through Mashomack Nature Preserve are especially beautiful. Summer is a whirlwind of activity both outdoor and indoor. Our beaches and harbors are beautiful, restaurants are open. Fall brings crisp air and beautifully colored leaves. Great time for walks. Winter - if it snows sledding on Goat Hill and cross country skiing are great fun. It's time to make soup and dine at Red Maple-my favorite for Sunday brunch!
